Candidate's Answer:I have experience as a municipal bylaw enforcement officer in 2 roles; animal services and municipal bylaw. I have certified in oapso and MLEO and have recently applied for the long service medal for my commitment to municipal law. I have recently graduated with a conflict management certificate and believe in on going education.
Situation: In my current role as a municipal law enforcement, I am responsible for overseeing various municipal bylaws, including zoning laws and by-laws related to yard maintenance, property standards, vacant buildings and heritage designation. One particular instance involved receiving multiple complaints about a property that was newly recognized as vacant, being accessed by homeless and deteriorating as per the complaint.
Task: My task was to investigate the complaint thoroughly, gather evidence, and determine if the by-law violation occurred. I needed to follow proper procedures to ensure fairness while maintaining the integrity of the investigation.
Action: I started my investigation by reviewing our mu computer system, to see if there were any previous complaints, who the owner was and attended the address to gather evidence. reviewed the specific by-law regulations and spoke with the complainant. I also documented all findings and communicated with our building department and Hamilton police to ensure all parties were aware of the violations. Additionally, I ensured that the property owner was notified and given a chance to respond to the allegations before moving forward Result: Based on the evidence I gathered, I was able to confirm that the property owner had indeed violated the by-laws. As a result, I issued a vacant building registry and an order to secure the property. The property owner was required to comply with the regulations. Having owner contact information for any future incidents and The complainant was satisfied with the resolution. The approach helped improve relations between all.
